Things you can actually finish

Every project here is free, written for someone doing it for the first time, and honest about how long it really takes. Start at whatever level matches you today — a keyring you hand-sew on the sofa counts every bit as much as a jacket. Wonky seams are the whole point.

Not sure where you land? Take the two-minute level quiz or read The Pattern, our free five-level curriculum.

What a project costs here

Level 0 projects come in under about $25 total, hand-sewn, with no machine at all — and each level after it adds only what that level actually needs. When a project does need equipment we link the gear category rather than pushing one product at you.

Borrowing counts

A machine from a relative's closet, a library makerspace, or a friend's spare is a completely valid way to do every machine project on this site. Our advice is frequently “don't buy anything yet” — see how we score gear.
