What thread should a beginner use?
All-purpose polyester, in a colour close to your fabric or a shade darker. It sews cotton, polyester, knits and most things a beginner makes, with enough give not to snap in a knit seam. Cotton thread on quilting cotton is a preference rather than a rule, and specialty threads can wait.
Does sewing thread go bad?
Good thread lasts a long time, but it does age. Superior Threads blames sunlight and dust and suggests a snap test: pull 6 to 12 inches of thread taut between your hands until it breaks. A clean snap means it is still good; if it pulls apart slowly like cotton wool, throw it out.
Can I use the same thread in the top and the bobbin?
