- Because a big cone will not fit a home machine's spool pin, and cross-wound thread is meant to come off over the top of the cone rather than spin on a pin. Superior Threads, the thread maker, says a stand steadies the cone and lifts the thread higher than the machine so it feeds evenly without added tension, and it advises against forcing a heavy cone onto the vertical pin.

- A thread stand, spool stand or cone stand: all three names mean the same freestanding base with a tall guide arm. The pin built into your machine is the spool pin. A stand sits beside the machine and holds the thread that will not fit on it.
- What's the best way to store thread?
- Out of direct sunlight and away from air vents. Superior Threads says long exposure to UV fades thread and can make it brittle, and dust blown from vents settles on open spools and then comes off inside your machine. A drawer, a cupboard or a closed plastic box all work; a wall rack is fine anywhere the sun never reaches.
