Not sure this is the one? The Machine Finder narrows it to three.

How to choose a machine for quilting

  1. Whether your current machine already does it — A standard sewing machine quilts a lap-size top perfectly well, and the quilted lap throw in Level 3 of The Pattern is made on one. Before buying anything, check whether a walking foot and a bigger table would solve the problem you actually have.
  2. Throat space — The gap between the needle and the machine's upright body sets how much rolled-up quilt can pass through it. Domestic machines offer a modest amount and machines marketed for quilting offer more. A lap quilt fits through almost anything; a queen top is where the extra room stops being a luxury.
  3. A walking foot — A walking foot feeds the top layer at the same rate the feed dogs move the bottom layer, so the three layers of a quilt sandwich do not creep apart. Without one, straight-line quilting tends to finish with pleats on the backing. Check whether it is included or sold separately.

Our read

Written from the manufacturer's listing, the published specs and public owner feedback. We research and analyse — we don't lab-test, and we don't claim to have stitched with this ourselves. Reviewed by the SewingPath team · Hilly Shore Labs · updated October 8, 2026.

Get it if

Lettering and decorative work — 185 stitches including 55 alphanumeric ones, plus the wide table and eight feet the listing includes.

Skip it if

You want a walking foot in the box. Brother's feet list for the HC1850 has none, and it lists a free-motion quilting foot as an optional purchase; the CS7000X includes a walking foot.

  • Fabric Scissors — a pair kept for fabric only.
  • Pins & Fabric Clips — to hold layers together before they go under the foot.

Brother HC1850 or Brother XR9550?

Close siblings: both have eight feet with a spring action quilting foot, a wide table, eight buttonhole styles and 55 alphanumeric stitches. The HC1850 has 185 stitches to 165, and Brother lists a start/stop button and adjustable speed for it, which its XR9550 page does not mention. The XR9550 adds a hard case and an upper thread sensor and usually costs less.

Questions buyers ask

Can the Brother HC1850 monogram?
It does basic sewn monogramming: Brother lists 55 alphanumeric stitches in one built-in font. It is not an embroidery machine, so there is no hoop and no embroidery designs.
Does the Brother HC1850 come with a walking foot?
No. Its eight feet include a spring action quilting foot but no walking foot, and Brother lists a free-motion quilting foot as an optional extra purchase.
