Not sure this is the one? The Machine Finder narrows it to three.

How to choose a beginner sewing machine

  1. The three stitches you will actually use — A first machine only has to sew a straight stitch, a zigzag and a buttonhole well. Those three cover every project in Levels 0 to 2 of The Pattern, and a 170-stitch machine sews them no better than a 20-stitch one. Count the stitches you will use, not the ones printed on the box.
  2. How the buttonhole is made — A one-step buttonhole sews the whole hole in a single pass once you drop the buttonhole foot; a four-step asks you to turn a dial at each side and stop in the right place. Both produce a working buttonhole, and a four-step is not a reason to reject a machine. It is, though, the feature that most changes how a beginner feels about their first shirt.
  3. How the bobbin loads — A drop-in bobbin sits under a clear plate where you can see the thread running out; a front-loading bobbin lives in a removable case behind a door. Drop-in is easier to learn, easier to unjam and is what most machines under $250 use. Neither sews better than the other.

Our read

Written from the manufacturer's listing, the published specs and public owner feedback. We research and analyse — we don't lab-test, and we don't claim to have stitched with this ourselves. Reviewed by the SewingPath team · Hilly Shore Labs · updated October 8, 2026.

Get it if

Knowing already that you want to quilt — 165 stitches, an LCD, and the wide table plus eight sewing and quilting feet the listing includes, which is what makes a quilt manageable on a domestic machine.

Skip it if

You want the fewest possible settings for a first project. 165 stitches is a lot of menu, and the Brother XM2701 or CS5055 cover everyday sewing for less.

What owners say

Paraphrased from the themes that recur across Amazon owner reviews (4,741 ratings on this listing). Consensus, not quotes, and we don't turn it into percentages.

Owners consistently praise

  • Build quality and value for what is included.
  • The range of stitch options.
  • How well it suits a beginner despite the feature list.

Recurring complaints

  • Durability: it is the theme the critical reviews return to most.

Where owners split

  • Sewing performance, and how clear the instructions are.

As the manufacturer states them: Brother's XR9550 product page.

In the box, and what you'll still need

  • 8 feet: zigzag, buttonhole, zipper, button sewing, overcasting, blind stitch, monogramming, spring action quilting
  • Wide table and hard case
  • Accessory pouch with bobbins (4)
  • Needle set, ball point needle and twin needle
  • Seam ripper, cleaning brush, eyelet punch, screwdriver
  • Spool caps (3), extra spool pin, power cord, operation manual

Box contents as listed by Brother's XR9550 product page.

You'll still need

  • Thread — an all-purpose polyester thread in a couple of colours to start.
  • Fabric Scissors — a pair kept for fabric only.
  • Pins & Fabric Clips — to hold layers together before they go under the foot.
  • Bobbins — a few spares. Brother's product page doesn't name the bobbin class, so check your manual before you buy.
  • Walking Feet — if you will quilt through batting. Brother's feet list for the XR9550 has a spring action quilting foot but no walking foot.

Brother XR9550 or Brother HC1850?

Two Brother sewing-and-quilting machines with a lot in common: eight presser feet including a spring action quilting foot, a wide table, eight one-step buttonhole styles and 55 alphanumeric stitches. The HC1850 has 185 stitches to the XR9550's 165; the XR9550 adds a hard case and an upper thread sensor, and usually costs less. Brother lists a start/stop button and adjustable speed for the HC1850; its XR9550 page mentions neither.

Questions buyers ask

Is the Brother XR9550 good for quilting?
For piecing and small quilts, yes: Brother includes a wide table and a spring action quilting foot, and the drop feed allows free-motion quilting. For straight-line quilting through batting, add a walking foot, which is not in the box.
Is the Brother XR9550 too complicated for a beginner?
Owners rate it well for beginners, and Brother keeps the automatic needle threader and drop-in bobbin. The 165 stitches are extras; a beginner uses a handful of them. If a simpler control layout matters more, start with the XM2701.
