How to choose a machine for quilting
- Whether your current machine already does it — A standard sewing machine quilts a lap-size top perfectly well, and the quilted lap throw in Level 3 of The Pattern is made on one. Before buying anything, check whether a walking foot and a bigger table would solve the problem you actually have.
- Throat space — The gap between the needle and the machine's upright body sets how much rolled-up quilt can pass through it. Domestic machines offer a modest amount and machines marketed for quilting offer more. A lap quilt fits through almost anything; a queen top is where the extra room stops being a luxury.
