Not sure this is the one? The Machine Finder narrows it to three.

How to choose a beginner sewing machine

  1. The three stitches you will actually use — A first machine only has to sew a straight stitch, a zigzag and a buttonhole well. Those three cover every project in Levels 0 to 2 of The Pattern, and a 170-stitch machine sews them no better than a 20-stitch one. Count the stitches you will use, not the ones printed on the box.
  2. How the buttonhole is made — A one-step buttonhole sews the whole hole in a single pass once you drop the buttonhole foot; a four-step asks you to turn a dial at each side and stop in the right place. Both produce a working buttonhole, and a four-step is not a reason to reject a machine. It is, though, the feature that most changes how a beginner feels about their first shirt.
  3. How the bobbin loads — A drop-in bobbin sits under a clear plate where you can see the thread running out; a front-loading bobbin lives in a removable case behind a door. Drop-in is easier to learn, easier to unjam and is what most machines under $250 use. Neither sews better than the other.

Our read

Written from the manufacturer's listing, the published specs and public owner feedback. We research and analyse — we don't lab-test, and we don't claim to have stitched with this ourselves. Reviewed by the SewingPath team · Hilly Shore Labs · updated October 8, 2026.

Get it if

Sewing fast on a dial-driven machine — SINGER states 1,100 stitches per minute, a 60% stronger motor and a heavy-duty metal interior frame, with 23 stitches and no screen to learn.

Skip it if

You want a screen and decorative stitches, or you are wary of the durability complaints in its owner reviews. The Brother machines on this shelf are the alternative.

As the manufacturer states them: SINGER's Heavy Duty 4423 product page.

In the box, and what you'll still need

  • General purpose, zipper, buttonhole and button sewing feet
  • Edge/quilting guide
  • Pack of needles and bobbins
  • Spool caps, auxiliary spool pin and spool pin felt
  • Screwdriver and seam ripper/lint brush
  • Soft dust cover

Box contents as listed by SINGER's Heavy Duty 4423 product page.

You'll still need

  • Thread — an all-purpose polyester thread in a couple of colours to start.
  • Machine Needles — spare needles in the size your fabric calls for, because a dull or bent needle causes most skipped stitches.
  • Fabric Scissors — a pair kept for fabric only.
  • Pins & Fabric Clips — to hold layers together before they go under the foot.
  • Bobbins — a few spares. SINGER specifies Class 15 transparent bobbins for this machine.

SINGER 4423 or SINGER 4432?

Same body, same 1,100 stitches per minute, same 6 mm stitch width, one-step buttonhole, needle threader and Class 15 bobbins. The 4432 has 32 stitches and 110 applications to the 4423's 23 and 97, and usually costs more. If the extra stretch and decorative stitches matter, the 4432; if not, the 4423 does the everyday work.

Questions buyers ask

Is the SINGER 4423 good for beginners?
It is a common first machine: stitches are chosen on a dial, the needle threader and one-step buttonhole take care of two fiddly jobs, and SINGER offers a free online owner's class. Read the durability complaints in its reviews before you buy, and keep the receipt.
Can the SINGER 4423 sew denim and canvas?
SINGER says the Heavy Duty 4423 is designed for heavy duty projects from denim to canvas, with adjustable presser foot pressure and an extra-high presser foot lifter. Use a heavy duty or denim needle for thick seams.
What is the difference between the SINGER 4423 and 4552?
The 4552 is the newer Heavy Duty: 32 stitches to the 4423's 23, a DC motor with speed control, and a walking foot and non-stick foot in the box. The 4423 is rated slightly faster, 1,100 stitches per minute against 1,000.
