3. 3Presser-foot clearance — How far the foot lifts decides what fits underneath, and many machines have a second, higher lift position for exactly this. If you already know you are sewing bag straps or climbing jeans hems, check it before anything else.

SINGER 4432 or SINGER 4552?

Same stitch count, 32, and the same 110 applications. The 4432 is rated faster, 1,100 stitches per minute against 1,000. The 4552 is the newer machine: a DC motor with speed control, and a walking foot, a non-stick foot and heavy duty needles in the box, none of which the 4432's accessory list includes. Pay for the 4552 if you plan on leather, vinyl or quilt layers; otherwise the 4432 sews the same seams.
