How to choose a beginner embroidery machine

1. 1Hoop size — Hoop size is the single spec that decides what you can stitch. A 4x4 inch hoop covers monograms, patches, left-chest logos and most children's clothes; 5x7 is where larger motifs and back-of-garment designs become possible. Decide what you want to make before you decide what to spend.
2. 2Combination or embroidery-only — Some machines both sew and embroider; others only embroider. A combination machine is usually cheaper than buying a sewing machine and an embroidery machine separately and is the sensible answer if you do not already own a machine you like. Embroidery-only makes sense when you do.
3. 3How designs get onto the machine — Designs reach the machine by USB stick, by cable, or over wireless through the manufacturer's own app. Check which before you buy, because it decides how easily you can use design files bought from anyone other than the manufacturer.

Brother SE700 or Brother PE545?

Both have the 4 by 4 inch field, 135 built-in designs, 10 fonts and wireless LAN. The PE545 only embroiders: one embroidery foot, no sewing stitches, and a lower price. The SE700 adds 103 sewing stitches, 10 buttonhole styles and seven sewing feet. If you have no other machine, the SE700; if you already sew on a machine you like, the PE545 saves the difference.

Can the Brother SE700 sew as well as embroider?

Yes. Brother lists 103 built-in sewing stitches and 10 one-step buttonhole styles alongside the embroidery unit, and the box includes seven sewing feet as well as the embroidery foot.

What size designs can the Brother SE700 embroider?

Up to 4 by 4 inches, the size of the included frame. Brother notes the Artspira app lets you draw designs up to that size and send them to the machine wirelessly.

Does the Brother SE700 need Wi-Fi?

No. Wireless LAN is how Brother's Design Database Transfer software and the Artspira app send designs, but the SE700 also has a USB port, and its 135 built-in designs need neither.
